Description

ABSTRACT. -- Many exotic sportfish species have been stocked in Texas waters, but few introductions were successful. Nile perches (Lates) may remain in one Texas reservoir and tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) may be present in another. Peacock cichlids (Cichla) no longer are believed to exist in any location in Texas. Research on, and freshwater stocking of, these species has been discontinued. Red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) continue to be reared and stocked in selected power-plant reservoirs. Orangemouth corvina (Cynoscion xanthulus) are present in two reservoirs and orangemouth corvina x spotted seatrout (C. nebulosus) hybrids are in one; however, angler harvest of these fishes probably will remove them from state waters within the next few years. Key words: exotic fishes; Nile perch; tarpon; orangemouth corvina; peacock cichlid; Texas. **********
